Family Update;
For those who know, heard bits of, or knew nothing; Candy was in the hospital on Sunday night with pains around her abdomen. Regular ones. They admitted her under observation for pre-term labor, which she tested for. As anyone who's been at this state in pregnancy can tell you, its a dangerous time. Baby Valentine is -viable- if born, but not without a very difficult road out of the preemie unit, if not potential disabilities. Candy's Contractions were monitored, put on a fetal heartbeat monitor and so on. Thankfully, the shot they gave her to stop the contractions worked, and after a morning evaluation, she was released, and put on bed rest. She's going into her doctor tomorrow for a follow-up. As of this writing, she's staying at her mom's while I hop back and forth over The Hill to take care of the house and cats, her mom's house is a full hour closer to the doc and the hospitals. Valentine is still healthy, and everything is seeming to have returned to normal. At least as normal as we get. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes who knew about the now passed crisis. |

Around the house
Today was titanic's day off, so I spent the entire day at home first helping to clean the kitchen, then helping to clean the garage and look for EBay stuff. Now i have a ton of shit I'll need to photograph and list, including a bunch of furry comics. Stuff dug out includes: 4 volumes of the collected Omaha the Cat Dancer1-4 of Fangs of Kaath (I'm pretty sure I have #5 somewhere.) full run of Xandu across Diamond seasSome old Misc. furry fanzines A San Diego ComiCon program guide from 1988 Some issues of Vampirella from the late 70's early 80's. A box full of comics (non-furry) from the 70's and 80's. I'm not even sure what's in it. 20 (yes, 20) ear protector muffs from when Dwight was working at LAX A bunch of computer stuff. A carrying case for an old Apple computer from the early 90's. (Mac classic?) A bunch of telephone recievers (God only knows who would want those.) A box full of Pokemon cards and toys, and various misc. toys I haven't been able to sell over the years. Some Toy Story 2 promo plastic popcorn buckets. My BlizzCon badge from 2007. I have been unable to sell the rest of the laserdiscs even at less than a dollar a disc, so they will probably all go to GoodWill. The exception to that will be the Japanese Song of the South Laserdisc, and probably the complete Jungle Emperor (Kimba) set. But with the price of LDs not even worth the stuff they're printed on, the chance of getting even a small fraction of what it originally cost is doubtful. If it even sells at all. If anyone is interested in any of this stuff, make me an offer and save me the trouble of having to list it. I also have half a dozen commissions lined up I'll need to get done by the end of the month in my unending quest to keep up with bills and expenses. I'm plowing through the inks on Ice #6 pretty quickly (up to about page 20) but I'll have to take a week off to get the commissions done. Tomorrow i also get to go to the dentist for a cleaning. I can't afford it, but I've been having some problems my dental-phobic friends probably don't want me to describe, so I need to at least get it looked at to make sure it doesn't turn into something more serious. Luckily I'm not particularly afraid of the dentist-- it's just an uncomfortable hassle. I have a very small mouth and it's not fun having to have it jammed open for an hour or two. One time they even had to use some kind of a door-stop thing shoved between my teeth to keep it open wide enough. Bleah. Current Mood: apathetic |

Home again, home again.
I am back from Charlotte. It was a fun and educational visit. It was nice to see Robert again and hang out. I got to meet a few SCA folks from a meet up group he is part of last night in a Denny's. Everyone was very friendly. I learned quite a bit about the area while visiting, and now am extremely familiar with S Tryon, I-77, and I-85. If you love to plane spot, West Blvd is an amazing spot to scope out jets. The down side to Charlotte is you need to drive everywhere. Some spots are beautiful and new, and some are semi-scary. I guess you could say that for parts of Richmond. Something that felt odd was feeling like a foreigner. I got odd looks when I said that I came down from Richmond. I'll keep looking in both places and a few others. I guess it's a race to see who adopts me first. |

Pan's Labyrinth
So this is a film that for YEARS I've been hearing people rave about. In fact, usually with fangirlish glee. Sorry, it may have buried in it a fairy tale, but a fairy tale of the unexpurgated Grimm type. It's really more about the mop-up by the Spanish Fascists after WWII and a really ugly situation caused by a really ugly-souled man, and an excuse for some of the most gruesome bullet wound and injury effects I've seen since Saving Private Ryan, only more intimate. This is not the "Adult Fairy Tale" all the reviewers keep echoing each other about. The real story is about the brutality in Franco's Spain. Spoiler space And the ending, well, let's just say that unless you're self-deluded, the cinematography and the editing removes any doubt as to the realness of the story. It's just gross, wet and muddy, torturous without a moment of relief, and relentlessly unhappy. People give it amazing reviews primarily based on everyone else's brilliant reviews. You can tell by the repetition of the "Adult Fairy Tale" line. One is expected to praise this film. But it's pretty clear that the little girl is using the ideas of a fairy tale to escape from the overbearing horror of her life, and in the end, it fails her. There ARE some amazing performances, Maribel Verdu is really the star. I only gave it 2/5, Technically amazing, but really horrible story. Spanish with English subtitles. Current Mood: disappointed |

Clearwire is going to send me a new modem for free. They're switching over to WiMax, so it's mandatory. The nice thing is they will DOUBLE my bandwidth for the same price, and I will still own the new modem. 3 MBPS down, and 256K up. Current Mood: pleased |

I think I still use this thing.
Greetings people of the internet (or those who still read my journal). I am currently in Charlotte, NC. My friend Robert has been a lovely host and culinary connoisseur during my visit. At the moment, I've been scoping out the area and doing a bit of job hunting. It's been going so-so so far, but I have made a number of phone calls and a few interviews since visiting. My last one will be at 2PM. I will either be returning back to Richmond late this evening, or 9AM in the morning depending upon how awake/tired I am tonight. I'm going to go reeducate myself on mens shirt and coat measurement taking before my 2PM interview. I also need to contact an interior design shop when I get back (the business card is at home). When I get back I will be a bit occupied. After MFF, whether I move or not I will probably start boxing up some of my things and getting rid of anything that I don't need to take with me elsewhere or need in general. I'll post about that when time gets closer. I really want some order back in my daily life again. I may be a bit quieter than I normally am at MFF. I will try to be my normal self at the panels. |

Candi Color Contest http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Megan-Giles/candidress.gifAs stated on FurAffinity, whoever colors her up the best wins the original :) So far there are some VERY pretty pieces by Harashi and Tim Fay, so be sure to fire up Photoshop and pick your palette. Will she be tan for summer or white for winter pelt? Will she be day or evening dress? Pattern or plain? You decide! |

I win again
It's like everyone I ever wanted to give the finger to is getting theirs. First all the d-bags at work for passing me up and then me getting a job at Inside Edition making tons of money. Now a tiny victory. Last year I had a spat with the guy who ran JumpCon for spamming an LJ community: http://lockemaison.livejournal.com/350983.htmlNow the guy has been sentenced to 5 years probation for running a "con" scheme. I like how he says this was never about money. Dude, the entire point behind corp cons is money, not fans. |

Wrong audience Wrong audience
I got a call from the CalArts alumi association today. It was supposedly to update my contact info, but it was really to solicit 'donation' money from me. Umm...maybe if I wasn't fucking unemployed and still having to pay off my damn student loan I might consider it. I told them to go beg money from some of my classmates that have fabulous jobs and more money than God. You get what you pay for.I needed to get some new brushes to ink with. I went with the cheaper ones, which are already splitting after 15 pages. On the other hand, my old Windsor-Newtons are still working perfectly, as long as I wash them with brush soap a couple times a day. I guess in this case you do get what you pay for. Get the damn vaccineSomeone on my LJ friends list is in the hospital with H1N1. He's been in for over a week and is on a resperator and is in very grave condition. Everyone who thinks the shots are dangerous should read what he's gone through in the past week. Current Mood: contemplativeCurrent Music: TV commercials |

Mad Men musings
Last night's finale was EPIC. The selling of Sterling Cooper, the betrayals, the re-friendings, the divorce banter. Yes, Betty is asking Don for a divorce in 1963 when it was not so easy to obtain. "The state of New York doesn't want anyone to get divorced." her lawyer states. Divorce laws at the time were tricky, and the man got everything: house, kids, you name it. Plus you had to prove adultery, which is a lot harder than it sounds. And so lots of people went to Reno where 6 weeks residency was all you needed to get severed. And then, there was stigma. It made me think about how things have changed since 1963, mainly for us gals. But then part of me wishes we could go back to the way things were then, in terms of all the politeness and the fashions and the well-disciplined kids. Oh the hats... |

Baby Registry...
I've been asked where our Baby Registry is located; And since this is mainly where Candy points people to for "unlocked" information about our upcoming one, I'm going to list it here; We've been doing our registry through Amazon.com, mainly due to factors I won't get into. If you go to amazon.com and go into the baby department, and look up my name (Ryan Dewalt) under baby registry, you'll find us there. This link might actually work. Please don't take this as solicitation of gifts, well, okay, I guess you can say it is, me posting a pointer to our registry etcetera... But really I've been asked where we're registered, and so I'm putting up a simple "Ah, here it is." post. (And knowing me, since most of my family doesn't know about livejournal, I'll post it on my facebook too, but just the once, I'm no spammy fool.) |

A taste of Dr. Mauser
I love writing this mad scientist stuff. Where else can you describe attacking a mountain with a blimp? This is from the first entry in the series without any fetish stuff in it. (Background bits: In his first story, Dr. Mauser stole one of the Goodyear blimps for his attack on the AFC championship game with his madness inducing beam, an offshoot of his heat ray/Stunner. It uses a flat panel emitter much like the phased array radar panels on a modern battleship. El Monstroso is another mad scientist who's been mentioned before who'd been taken out by the Forces of Justice (tm). This is from part two of a story. In the first part, Avogadro, "The Mole", gruesomely killed one of Dr. Mauser's agents with his disintegrator. This is revenge.)
Anjela "Angel of Death" Ramirez lowered her binoculars, and let out a low whistle. She had been in this business for a long time, but there was still nothing in the world quite like seeing two super scientists going at it in battle. At once both absurd and terrifying, the concept of a blimp attacking a mountain seemed ridiculous, until the blimp started releasing energies that dwarfed nature's fury. Even from her place of concealment on top of another mesa a half a mile away, Anjela got the feeling that a flashlight tour of Chernobyl Reactor #4 would be a safer place to be. This was an order of magnitude more intense than anything she'd been involved with before. El Monstroso's menagerie of genetically modified monsters was a petting zoo by comparison. For this attack, Dr. Mauser had equipped the blimp with four emitter panels and had somehow managed to borrow a singularity-based power supply. The thing could produce enough energy to power a city for a day, but was impossibly expensive to run. And all of that energy was being poured into the top of the mesa. The waves of heat distortion rising from the growing pool of lava looked more like a waterfall in reverse. The invisible beam from the heat ray sparkled as dust and smoke particles and thrown debris entered it, flared into incandescence and exploded into puffs of plasma. She could feel the heat even at this distance, and even in the desert sun. The plan was simple enough, he was going to melt as much of the top of the mountain as it took until the puddle breached one of the tunnels and flooded Avogadro's complex with molten rock. If that didn't force him out, it would kill him. Troops were stationed in the canyon in case he made a break for it down there, and she was positioned here to snipe at the first opportunity. If Avogadro fired his beam (and it would have to be blindly), attack helicopters were ready to pump missiles into the resulting holes in the mountain. And then it came, the blindingly bright flash of Avogadro's disintegrator. The beam was visible more as the afterimage it left on the eye. One of the helicopters swooped into position to fire, when there was another flash and the top of the copter ceased to exist. Rotor blades flew out in all directions, and the fuselage dropped to the canyon floor where it crashed and crumpled, without the slightest indication of fire. "Damn, he's got a fast recharge on that thing," Anjela said. (snip) The rest is on DA. There are nasty bits there, so be warned. It's all behind the Mature Content warning, so if you don't have a DA account, you might not be able to read it. The very curious can get this from me by e-mail. Current Mood: creative |

Confusion
I was recently given a copy of the Dec. 2009 Realms of Fantasy magazine. Not something I normally get, because i (generally) don't like reading short stories. But a freebe, sure... Anyhow, it also had a lot of ads for various books, both pro and self-published. Now I'm aware writing a blurb for a book is tricky, but you know a book is going to be trouble when the blurb sounds confusing! Witness: (copied verbatum, including the spacings.) Maggie Roche is an out-of-work poet and single mother. Spied on by a cyborged rat, attacked, drugged into panic and rapture, seduced, drawn into conspiracy, she's flung four thousand years into her own future. In the alien world of the Ull- Upload Lifeform Lords who are human-machine hybrids of overwhelming power-she learns that she is history's first true time traveler, hunted by friend and foe to the end of time. The entire future of the cosmos will be reset by these terrifying events.
That blurb would make me run for the hills. If the blurb sounds confusing and is difficult to get through, imagine what the book is like! I've given some thought to a blurb/brief intro to my own book, in case i need to start sending out query letters to publishers. Most books can be summarized by a single sentence. So summary #1: A griffin's search for his missing daughter inadvertently leads him to a conspiracy that threatens his entire world. But for a query you're generally supposed to summarize the story in a paragraph or so. Ironicly, the more leeway you're given, the harder it is to distill the important elements down. So summary #2 would be something like this: When Griffin Ranger Harrell White-shoulders' daughter Aera, along with four of her friends, vanishes without a trace, he is pulled from his familiar partrol to find her. Accompanied by an extoic Griffin investigator and an inexperienced assistant, Harrell's search leads him across the continent to an isolated town on the southern plains. There he uncovers a secret so devistating those hiding it will go to any lengths to keep him from telling what he knows, including killing everyone he loves.
Even that is a little more abbreviated than it needs to be, but generally less is more. And of course there's the good blurb that leads me to buy a book that ends up being sucky, but that's a whole other post. Current Mood: workingCurrent Music: Howard Stern |

So, anyone want to go see Pirate Radio with me on the 13th? It's got Nick Frost and Philip Seymour Hoffman in it, which means it's going to be a wonderful movie. Also, on the 14th I'm going to be meeting Brig and Whitetail in Gettysburg, PA. We are going to do a bit of stuff and non-sense. Anyone want to go with? |
